CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Royals have started off the New Year well winning their second game of the 2009 Thursday night over Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. Queens University of Charlotte defeated the Valkyries 77-56 in league play, to improve to 4-5 record overall and 3-1 in Conference Carolinas action, while the Valkyries fall to 0-11 and 0-6 for the season.
Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University ) led Queens with a total of 20 points and 3 rebounds, followed by Erin Goldner (Matthews, N.C., Piedmont) who had 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists. Jacquia Winstead (Elm City, N.C., Beddingfield) came away with 12 points and pulled down 7 rebounds, easily maintaining the roughly ten point lead the Royals sustained throughout the game. The largest lead of the game occurred at the 52-73 mark when the royals dominated by 21 points.
The Royals led most aspects of the game, shooting 57% from the arc, and 68% from the charity stripe while the Valkyries only shot 33% from the arc and 82% from the charity stripe. Ashley Arff led Converse in scoring with 12 points, while freshman Alaina Smith added ten, and Sydney Brown contributed 9 more.
The Royals battle the Limestone Saints this coming Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 5:30PM in Ovens Athletic Center.
