In the first away game of the season, Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team fell 4-0 to Wingate University on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.
With the victory, Wingate improves to 2-0 overall on the young season. Queens is 0-2 overall. The Royals made the 2007 NCAA Division II tournament as the champions of the Conference Carolinas.
Wingate out-shot Queens 19-2 in the game and scored two goals in each half.
Wingate sophomore forward Kerstin Williams opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, converting a double-assist from junior midfielder Jordan Mayer and sophomore midfielder Julie Zielinski . Mayer took a left-to-right pass from Zielinski and squirted the ball to a fast-moving Williams in the goal mouth.
Six minutes later, two freshmen connected to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage entering the half-time locker room. Midfielder Kelly Adams tallied the first goal of her collegiate career on a cross from forward Liz Kinney.
Bulldog junior forward Madi Welch scored Wingate's third goal at the 58:57 plateau.
Wingate freshman Kelsey McCormick completed the scoring at 73:49, picking up a loose ball and blasting it into the nets from the left side. McCormick also recorded her first goal as a Bulldog Tuesday afternoon.
For the Royals, junior goalkeeper Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run )allowed four goals and recorded four saves in 74 minutes. Queens sophomore Michelle Landry (Atlanta, Ga., Druid Hills )played the final 16 minutes between the posts. Landry had one save.
Sami Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ) and Katherine Carr (Upper Marlboro, Md. , St. Mary's ) each tallied one shot for Queens.
In the goal, Wingate senior Kathryn Smith notched her second shutout in as many tries Tuesday. A four-year starter, Smith faced only two shots. She recorded one save. Bulldog sophomore netminder Sarah Bollman played the final nine minutes in the nets.
