Royals Tie No. 19 Belmont Abbey 1-1

Strong Queens defense holds off the Crusaders

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Erin Likins (Leavenworth, Kan., Leavenworth ) scored the game-tying goal with just seven minutes left to play in the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer game against Belmont Abbey College tonight at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park.

The game was a struggle between the strong Royals (5-5-2/5-0-1 Conference Carolinas) defense and the Crusader (8-0-3/4-0-1 Conference Carolinas) offense for much of the game. During regulation neither team completely controlled the game, but much of the time was spent just over the midfield line on the Queens side.

Belmont Abbey took the lead with 16 minutes remaining in the game as Kristin Viorini scored off of a corner kick from Lauren Faerber.

Linkins equalized the game with help from Sami Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside )with just seven left to play.

Despite not registering any shots in the overtime periods, Queens turned on the offense and created chances, but just couldn't finish the plays.

The game saw just 12 total shots, Belmont Abbey with eight and Queens with four. The goalies made a total of three saves, Queens' Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run )had two and Crusader Anna Wells registered one.

The Royals gave up 12 cornerkicks to the visitors and did not earn any from them.

Queens take a break from Conference Carolinas play and travel to Columbus, Ga., for two games in the Columbus State University Tournament on Friday, Oct. 10 and Sunday, Oct. 12.
