THE SHORT STORY
Queens University of Charlotte dropped its final non-conference game of the season, 10-3, to visiting Elon University tonight at The Stick. Elon jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Royals were able to cut the lead to two before Elon scored in each of the final three innings.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon took an early lead after scoring a pair of runs in the second inning and then pushed its lead to 5-0 headed to the bottom of the fifth after plating three more runs.
-
Logan Norris in the bottom half of the fifth doubled to lead off and then moved to third off
Dylan Schaefer's bunt single. Schaefer was able to steal second before
Jacob Grimes was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Norris later scored off Hunter Honeycutt's RBI groundout to first to cut the lead to 5-1.
- Queens in the bottom of the sixth got things going when
Karter Wong doubled to left field to open the inning and then advanced to third on a wild pitch with one down.
Charlie Marcantel's RBI single through the left side scored Wong to cut the lead to three. Marcantel later scored when Schaefer doubled down the right field line to make it a 5-3 game before the inning ended.
- Elon broke the game open in the late innings when it scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings, while adding a run in the ninth to take a 10-3 lead.
- The Royals were able to put runners on it each of the last three innings, but were unable to score as the Elon bullpen allowed two hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch to secure the win.
