THE SHORT STORY
Queens University of Charlotte, for the second time in three days, walked it off against Florida Gulf Coast University this time in a 6-5 victory this afternoon at The Stick to win the series 2-1. Down by two going into the ninth, the Royals loaded the bases with
Lenox Lively coming up; his bases-clearing double with one down sealed the come-from-behind victory for Queens.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- FGCU posted a pair of runs in the first, two more in the second, and one in the third to take a 5-0 lead after five and a half innings.
- In the bottom of the sixth,
Dylan Schaefer walked and later moved to third when Lively doubled to right center to put runners on the corners. Schaefer then scored off a groundout too short to make it 5-1. Lively later scored on
Anibal Rivera's RBI single to left to cut the lead to three before the inning ended.
- Queens added a run in the bottom of the eighth when
Bradley Brown's sacrifice fly plated Schaefer to make it a 5-3 game headed to the ninth.
- With Queens down to its final three outs,
Mitchell Basterrechea was hit by a pitch to start the inning off. Following a strikeout, he later moved to second when
Matthew Suppa singled up the middle. Suppa was later lifted for pinch runner
Jacob Grimes. Schaefer's walk loaded the bases full of Royals, which forced FGCU to make a pitching change. Now with a new pitcher on the mound for FGCU, Lively connected on a bases-clearing double to left-center to give Queens the victory.
