THE SHORT STORY
The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team battled but ultimately fell 3-1 to George Mason on Friday evening inside the Levine Center. After dropping the opening set, the Royals responded with a strong second frame to even the match before the Patriots claimed the final two sets to secure the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-SET ONE – George Mason 25, Queens 19
The Patriots jumped ahead early in the opening frame and held the advantage throughout the set. Queens recorded 12 kills in the set but was unable to overcome the early deficit as George Mason took the opening point of the match.
-SET TWO – Queens 25, George Mason 20
Queens responded in the second set with its most efficient offensive stretch of the night, hitting .455 with 12 kills and just two errors. The Royals built momentum midway through the set and closed strong to even the match at 1-1.
-SET THREE – George Mason 25, Queens 20
The third set featured tight play early before George Mason created separation late in the frame. The Patriots used a balanced offensive attack to regain the match lead heading into the fourth set.
-SET FOUR – George Mason 25, Queens 23
Queens battled in a back-and-forth fourth set that featured multiple ties and lead changes. The Royals stayed within striking distance late, but George Mason executed down the stretch to close the set and seal the 3-1 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Casey Maas led the Royals with 15 kills while adding nine digs.
- Kaden Saurer added 12 kills and four service aces for Queens.
- Caden Ledbetter turned in an efficient night with seven kills on a .545 hitting percentage.
- Charlie Podgorny directed the offense with 37 assists and 11 digs.
- Queens finished the match with 47 kills and 50 digs as a team.
