Queens Falls to FGCU on the Road

FORT MYERS, FLA. — Queens University of Charlotte volleyball fell to FGCU, 3-0, on Friday night at Alico Arena, with the Eagles taking the match 26-24, 25-16, 25-19.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Queens opened the match with a strong offensive performance, jumping out to a 7-3 lead in the first set. FGCU battled back to tie the score at 16-16 before the Royals again created separation late. Queens and FGCU battled, but the Eagles scored the final two points to take the opening set, 26-24.
  • FGCU carried the momentum into the second set, though Queens again stayed within striking distance early. The Royals briefly held leads before the Eagles gradually pulled ahead. FGCU closed the set on a 7-0 run to take a 2-0 set lead.
  • The Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 advantage in the third set behind three consecutive service aces. Queens answered to cut the deficit to 8-4, but FGCU maintained control throughout the remainder of the frame.
  • Queens continued to battle late in the third, cutting the margin to 23-18 before the Eagles reached match point. The Royals added another point on an FGCU service error, but FGCU closed out the match, 25-19.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Emma Norris led the Royals with 11 kills on 18 attacks while hitting .444. Elizabeth Layson added eight kills, while Kyla Coffey and Layni Tobias each finished with five.
  • Tobias added a team-high four total blocks, while Naomi Cole contributed two block assists.
  • Callie DeSchryver recorded three kills, five digs, two aces and two total blocks.
  • Megan Kelly and Grace Hargis each recorded 12 assists, combining for 24 of Queens' 29 assists.
  • Queens finished with 36 kills and hit .173 as a team. FGCU recorded 44 kills while hitting .367 and held a 38-21 advantage in digs.

POSTMATCH COMMENTS
"I thought we did a great job of executing our game plan, lots of focus and lots of energy after a very impressive week of practice," said Queens head coach Matt Stolz. "I thought Layni Tobias did a great job tonight in blocking and attacking. We also thought Naomi Cole stepped up and had some nice moments during the match. Really excited to travel to Stetson for Sunday."
