Queens Battles Longwood in Home Opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team opened its 2025 season on Sunday at Bessant Field, falling 3–1 to visiting Longwood despite controlling much of the attacking play.

Longwood jumped ahead just 32 seconds into the match when Madison Wiley scored the opener. The Lancers doubled their advantage midway through the second quarter on a solo effort from Hailey Flick, then extended the lead to 3–0 in the third when Channy Johnson finished off a penalty corner assisted by Zoe Tierney.

Queens put up consistent pressure, finishing with a 19–7 edge in shots and a 12–3 margin in penalty corners. Senior Enya Kemp broke through in the 54th minute, driving home a goal to put the Royals within two in the final quarter. Despite several late chances, Queens was unable to close the gap.

Kemp led the Royals with four shots, while Sydney Smith recorded six attempts and Hensley Miller added four. Goalkeeper Madison DeStefano posted three saves in the cage.

Defensively, Queens limited Longwood to just six shots on target.
