Queens Men’s Rugby Announces 2025–26 Coaching Staff Under New Head Coach Tyree Reed

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte Head Men's Rugby Coach Tyree Reed is proud to announce his full coaching staff for the 2025–26 season. Reed will continue overseeing the team's attack systems, aiming to elevate the program both on and off the field as it enters a critical new chapter.

"This is a big year for Queens men's rugby," said Reed. "We've assembled a staff that brings elite playing experience, strong coaching knowledge, and a deep love for this program. These men know what it means to be a Royal, and they're committed to helping our student-athletes succeed."

Dr. Jake Tingom – Assistant Forwards Coach

Dr. Jake Tingom, a Queens alumnus, returns to the program as assistant forwards coach. From 2018 to 2022, he played an integral role on the team that won the 2019 DII National Championship.

After graduation, Tingom coached with Bears Rugby (2022–2024) and played for Fayetteville Area Rugby Club while earning his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Methodist University. He now plays with Charlotte Rugby Club and works at Architech Sports and Physical Therapy.

"Coming back to coach at Queens means a lot to me," said Tingom. "This program shaped who I am, and it's an honor to give back to the place that gave me so much. I'm excited to help the next generation grow—just like this program helped me."

Ethienne Reynecke – Assistant Coach: Lineouts & Defense

Ethienne Reynecke brings an elite international pedigree as an assistant coach overseeing lineouts and defense. A former professional player from 2000–2016, Reynecke represented top-tier teams across South Africa (Lions, Stormers), England (Saracens), Ireland (Connacht), and France (Section Paloise).

His résumé includes experience in Super Rugby, the Currie Cup, the Premiership, the United Rugby Championship, and the European Champions Cup. Reynecke has also provided rugby analysis on SuperSport and consults globally with teams on defensive structure and post-contact collisions.

Reynecke holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biochemistry from the University of Johannesburg and an LLM in Law from the University of Hertfordshire.

"As a resident of Charlotte and, more importantly, a rugby man, I believe it's essential to give back to the community that has given me so much," Reynecke said. "I'm excited to help elevate Queens men's rugby to its full potential."

Alston Burton – Assistant Backs Coach & Director of Operations

Alston Burton, a 2019 National Champion and Class of 2021 graduate, joins the coaching staff as assistant backs coach and director of operations. Burton returns with championship experience and a deep connection to Queens men's rugby.

He previously coached with Bears Rugby in 2022 and now brings his knowledge and leadership back to his alma mater.

"I'm ecstatic to join a program with such a rich tradition," said Burton. "My goal is to build on that winning culture while helping our student-athletes grow into strong, disciplined individuals who proudly represent Queens men's rugby and Queens University on and off the field."

Doyle Hedgepeth – Assistant Forwards Coach

Doyle Hedgepeth joins the staff as assistant forwards coach, bringing a unique combination of international playing experience and homegrown pride. Like many of his fellow staff, Doyle is a Queens graduate, earning his degree in exercise and sport science in 2022.

Hedgepeth has competed at the highest levels of American rugby, representing the USA U-20s, U-23s, and the USA Hawks. As an international prop, he was drafted by Rugby New York in Major League Rugby. In addition to his playing career, he has also coached across multiple levels of the sport.

"Being back at Queens means everything to me," said Hedgepeth. "This program made me who I am. I'm here to give back and help us build something special."

A Unified Vision for Queens Men's Rugby

With Coach Reed leading the attack and a dynamic staff of alumni and international talent, the Royals are poised for a breakout season.

"Every coach on this staff knows what it means to be a Royal," Reed said. "We're building something special here, founded on accountability, development, and excellence. I couldn't be more excited for what's ahead."
