CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team opened Atlantic Sun Conference play this afternoon hosting Liberty (8-3, 3-0) at Dickson Field. The Royals fell 18-17 to the Flames in a hard-fought battle between the pair, bringing their record to 3-8 this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 2-0 early, Queens put together a 4-0 run to lead 4-2 with 7:42 to play in the first quarter. The Flames took advantage of a man-up opportunity to halt Queens' run at 5:12, and the period ended with Queens in front 5-4.
The second quarter was all Queens as they found the back of the cage eight times, thanks to a pair of runs strung together in the period. A late push by the Flames gave the game a 13-9 score at the half.
The Flames quickly jumped on the Royals in the third, scoring four unanswered goals to knot the game at 13-13, but a goal from
Michela Paterson with 9:50 to play sparked a three-goal run for the home team as they went back in front, 16-13. Liberty responded with back-to-back scores in the final two minutes, closing the margin to one, 16-15, heading into today's last quarter.
Lily Greenwell opened the scoring in the final period with her third goal of the game before Liberty closed with three consecutive goals to take the fourth meeting between the two programs.
