Scaffidi Scores Golden Goal to Lift Queens Past UMass Lowell

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team (2-3) earned its second straight win after defeating UMass Lowell (3-2) 12-11 in overtime. Today's win gives the Royals their first win streak in the Division I era.
  
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 7-4 at the end of the first quarter, Queens found the back of the cage three straight times in the second to tie the game at 7-7 with 8:23 on the clock. The River Hawks responded with a pair of goals to take a 9-7 lead at the half.
 
Out of the break, Queens scored three unanswered goals in the third period to see their first lead of the day, 10-9. The River Hawks tied the game again with a goal at 11:11 in the fourth, but a goal from Queens' Jack Royer put the Royals in front, 11-10, once more with 9:07 to play. The Royals held the lead until UMass Lowell's Riley Lawhorn came out of a timeout break and knotted the game back up with just one second left in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
 
Queens' Ethan Scaffidi scored the golden goal with one minute left to play in the overtime period to give the Royals their second win of the season.
 
KEY STATS & NOTES 
  • Jack Royer led the Royals with four goals and two assists, moving his career goal count to 86.
  • Carter Petersen recorded his second hat trick of the season while Ethan Scaffidi finished with two goals and one assist.
  • Defensively, Jacob Schreck totaled three caused turnovers and 10 ground balls while Deacon Adams tallied two caused turnovers and seven ground balls.
  • Queens won the battle at the face with Grant Isika going 14-23 and totaling three ground balls.
  • Dylan Axman earned the win in the cage for Queens after totaling four saves in 37:06. Nicky West recorded three saves in 25:54.
  • Riley Lawhorn led the River Hawks with three goals and one assist while Colby Frigon scored two goals.
  • In goal, AJ True recorded 17 saves for UMass Lowell.
  • Queens outshot the River Hawks 49-34, putting 29 shots on goal.
  • Queens totaled 41 ground balls compared to UMass Lowell's 34.
  • Today's game was a neutral site game played at Goucher.
