HOW IT HAPPENED
-Queens jumped on the visiting Bulldogs in the bottom of the first inning with two runs on three hits.
Jake Barbour reached safely after being hit by a pitch, and a failed pick-off attempt advanced the sophomore to third. With two outs and Barbour on third,
Justin Hudson delivered a deep RBI triple off the top of the center field wall.
Nick Alderfer followed it up with an RBI single to right field to cap the quick start for Queens.
-The Royals added onto their lead in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore
Charlie Marcantel blasted his first career home run as a Royal to push the lead to 3-0.
-After seeing their first nine retired in order, the visiting Bulldogs jumped on the board with a big five-run inning. Corbin Lanowitz got the rally started with a solo shot to right center and Rylen Stockton followed suit with a single to center field. A pop up would get the Royals closer to escaping the inning, but the Bulldogs went to work with two outs ripping a double and a two-run single to tie the game 3-3. A single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Jake Pererira delivered a two-run single to give UNC Asheville a 5-3 lead.
-UNC Asheville carried that momentum into the top of the fifth inning plating five more runs on four hits and a pair of free passes. The Bulldogs got timely swings and extended their lead to 10-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
-The Royals responded in the bottom half with a big seven-run frame. UNC Asheville turned to their bullpen and the Royals worked the new arm with a pair of walks from
Justin Hudson and
Lenox Lively and a single from
Nick Alderfer to load the bases.
Charlie Marcantel reached on a fielding error by the Bulldogs shortstop, and the miscue brought home a run. UNC Asheville would pick up a strikeout, but
Tyler Peters sent an RBI single to right field to plate a pair of Royals. The Bulldogs turned back to their bullpen looking to escape, but
Anibal Rivera greeted the new arm with a two-run double to left center. Sophomore
Jake Barbour followed it up with a three-run blast to right center on a 3-0 fastball to tie the game 10-10.
-UNC Asheville responded right back in the top of the sixth inning with four runs on five hits. Queens picked up two quick outs on seven pitches, but the Bulldogs went to work earning a two-out walk followed by four singles and a double to regain a 14-10 lead.
-The visiting Bulldogs added one insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. Patrick Gillen worked a one-out walk before a single down the right field line put runners on the corners. Coleman McGinnis would drop down a sacrifice bunt to plate the final Bulldogs run and give the visitors a 15-10 lead.
