ERIE, Pa. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team (1-3) picked up its first win of the season on the road this afternoon, defeating Mercyhurst University (0-3) by a score of 9-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Though Queens took a 4-2 lead heading into today's second quarter, the match would be tightly contested throughout. The Lakers tied things at 4-4 with 5:43 left to play in the first half. A goal from
Deacon Adams allowed the Royals to take control, 5-4, at the break.
Mercyhurst came out of the half with the momentum, scoring three unanswered goals to lead 7-5 with 4:52 on the clock. However, Queens had an answer, tallying three consecutive goals of their own to move back in front, 8-7, heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Following a goal from Mercyhurst's Jeremi Phoenix-Lefeb early in the period that tied the game at 8-8, Queens'
Jack Royer would score the game-winner with 8:08 to play.
KEY STATS & NOTES
- Jack Royer led the Royals with a hat trick. This is the third straight game that the attacker has scored three or more goals for Queens.
- At the face off, Grant Isika went 13-18 and tallied seven ground balls. Queens also won the battle at the face, 13-7.
- Nicky West collected the win in his first start of the year after recording a career-high 12 saves.
- Jeremi Phoenix-Lefeb and Ryan Mahoney led the Lakers with two goals each.
- Tyler Moritzen had 10 saves in goal.
- Queens totaled 19 shots on goal to Mercyhurst's 20 shots on goal.
- Mercyhurst totaled 26 ground balls compared to the Royals' 21 ground balls.
- After trailing the Lakers 1-8 in their DII matchups, Queens leads Mercyhurst 1- 0 in the DI era for both programs.
