CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte softball has announced its full 2026 schedule, featuring a competitive non-conference slate, battles with regional powers, and a series of early road tests designed to accelerate the development of one of the youngest rosters in program history.
The Royals open the season with a demanding stretch that includes matchups against Tennessee Tech, UNCG, South Carolina, UAB, and several top mid-major opponents. Head Coach Kella Armstrong believes the schedule reflects both where the program is headed and the standards they expect to uphold.
"I'm really looking forward to this schedule," Armstrong said. "Tennessee Tech, UNCG, South Carolina, UAB…those are the kinds of games that challenge you early and show you exactly where you stand. With a young roster, these matchups are going to push us and also give our group opportunities to rise to big moments."
That youth will be a defining trait of the 2026 squad, with over half the roster composed of freshmen and redshirt freshmen. Armstrong sees that as an asset rather than a hurdle.
"I'm really excited about this roster," she added. "Having so many freshmen and redshirt freshmen brings a ton of energy and openness to learning. They're hungry, competitive, and not afraid of big moments. Sure, there will be learning curves along the way, but that's part of the process. What excites me most is their willingness to grow together. This group has a chance to make huge strides, and it's fun to be a part of building that foundation with them."
Associate Head Coach Sierra Vanzant-Cheek echoed the same confidence, emphasizing how the difficulty of the schedule will prepare Queens for ASUN play.
"What excites me most about this year's schedule is the level of competition we get to face right away," Vanzant-Cheek said. "We're challenged early and often, and that's how we're going to find out who we are as a team. There's a great mix of strong non-conference opponents, road tests, and high-pressure environments that will push our group mentally and physically. For our younger players, it's an incredible opportunity to grow fast, and for our returners, it's a chance to set the standard."
Vanzant-Cheek believes the early tests are exactly what the program needs.
"I think the games we have ahead of us are going to give our team invaluable experience," she added. "We have high-level pitching and tough environments that will push our team to compete, adjust, and learn under pressure. Our goal is to grow our confidence and resilience so we can be more prepared when conference play begins."
With one of the youngest lineups in the league, the staff is embracing the challenge.
"The first thing that comes to mind is excited," Vanzant-Cheek said. "This group brings such exciting energy to our program. They show up every day hungry to get after it and to learn, which has been a blast to coach. They're fearless going into the season — they don't carry the weight of past seasons. All fall, we watched them elevate our competition within the program. The amount of potential in this group is what makes me so excited for this year and the years to come."
Beyond the roster, the Royals also strengthened their staff with the addition of alumni Abby Craver and Emma Frye, a homecoming that Armstrong says symbolizes the heart of the program.
"Bringing Abby Craver and Emma Frye onto our staff is incredibly meaningful for the growth and future of our program," Armstrong said. "Not only were they standout athletes, but they helped shape the standard and culture that still define this team today. Their experience as influential alumni gives them a unique ability to connect with our players on a level that only someone who has walked in their shoes truly can."
Armstrong noted that their return reinforces the program's values.
"They understand what it means to represent this program on and off the field — the expectations, the work ethic, and the pride behind the jersey," she continued. "Their leadership, passion, and firsthand knowledge of what it takes to succeed in this environment will be invaluable. Ultimately, adding them to our staff is not only a win for our athletes, but a powerful reminder that once you're part of this program, you're family."
The 2026 season will test the Royals early, sharpen them throughout non-conference action, and set the stage for a competitive ASUN campaign.
