Queens Drops Tight Matchup at Winthrop Despite Record Shooting Night

Score: Winthrop 75 | Queens 69
Records: Queens (2–2) | Winthrop (2–2)
Location: Winthrop Coliseum (Rock Hill, S.C.)

THE SHORT STORY
Queens came out strong with a 21–10 first-quarter lead but couldn't hold off a late Winthrop rally, falling 75–69 on Saturday afternoon. The Royals led for more than 22 minutes, shooting 47 percent from the floor and connecting on a season-high 11 three-pointers, but second-half turnovers and foul trouble proved costly down the stretch.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Ana Barreto led Queens with 17 points, including five made threes, her second double figure performance to start the season.
  • Jermany Mapp matched Barreto with 17 points, knocking down three triples while adding five rebounds and an assist.
  • Breah Franks continued her strong start with a career high twelve points and seven rebounds, shooting a perfect five for five from the field.
  • Dayuna Colvin added eight points and a team high four assists, while Brenae Jones Grant contributed five rebounds and two assists.
  • Queens went 11-17 from behind the arc and shot 47.2 percent overall.
NOTABLE MOMENTS
  • Queens opened the game on fire, hitting six first quarter threes while holding Winthrop to just thirteen percent shooting.
  • Winthrop used a fourteen to two run in the second quarter to erase the deficit and grab a brief halftime lead.
  • The Royals responded with a strong stretch in the third quarter to regain the advantage, but a late 10-2 Winthrop run proved to be enough the rest of the way.
  • Queens mounted one last push in the fourth, stringing together back-to-back stops and threes from Mapp and Barreto to cut the deficit to three with under 90 seconds remaining before Winthrop closed it out at the line
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
  • Franks' 12 points and seven rebounds were both new career highs, marking her second straight game with personal bests.
  • Barreto's five threes matched her career high set in February 2024 against USC-Upstate.
  • Queens eleven made three pointers, tied the program's all-time single game record and marked the most in the Royals Division I era.
