Early Goal from Caio Brandao Sends Queens Past Central Arkansas in ASUN Showdown on Saturday Night

CHARLOTTE. N.C. – An early ninth minute goal from veteran Caio Brandao proved the difference as the Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team picked up a statement 1-0 victory over Central Arkansas on Saturday night. The clean sheet was the Royals second of the season and the 11th in Division 1.

TURNING POINT
Queens jumped out on the visiting Bears with an early ninth-minute goal off the boot of Caio Brandao. The graduate student beat the Bears backline down the right side of the field dribbling it to the endline. Before running out of bounds, Brandao ripped the shot to the bottom left corner of the net and a deflection off the goalkeeper's leg finished the opportunity in the top left corner. After being given an early lead, the Royals backline went to work and held the Central Arkansas offense scoreless to improve to 1-0-1 in ASUN play this season.


KEY STATS & NOTES
  • Caio Brandao found the back of the net for his third goal of the season, and the sixth of his career. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native leads the Royals with eight points and three goals from the midfield.
  • Making his fourth career start in goal, freshman Matheus Rhormens improved to 2-1-1 with his second clean sheet. Rhormens picked up six saves in the victory.
  • Michel Feldman and Oliver Kneer added a pair of shots for the Royals attack. Feldman turned in a season-high 78 minutes of work.
  • Samuel Idinge, Ciro Bourlot Jaeggi, Roberto Alvarez, and Leontios Zacharia ripped a shot in the win.
  • Central Arkansas outshot Queens 19-11, including a 6-3 mark on goal. The 11 shots from the Royals marked the third match this season in which they reached double-digit shots and the third match in the last four outings.
  • Queens has dominated the first half outscoring opponents 7-3 in the first 45 minutes of action.
  • Seven Royals, including Samuel Idinge, Roberto Alvarez, Leontios Zacharia, Caleb Woodard, Cade Bender, Rodrigo Canovas, and Matheus Rhormens played complete games. The 90 minute performance was Cade Bender's first of his career.
  • With the victory, Queens improved to 1-3 all-time against the Bears. Last season, Central Arkansas ousted the Royals in their first ASUN Tournament appearance.
 
UP NEXT
Queens will return to action on Tuesday, October 1st when they travel to Blacksburg, Virginia for a tilt at No. 17 Virginia Tech. The match will kick off at 6:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus. Tuesday marks the second all-time between the Royals and the Hokies. Last season, Virginia Tech netted an early second half goal to emerge victorious 3-2 in Charlotte.
