WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball kick-started the 2024 campaign against East Carolina and Loyola Maryland on Friday, Aug. 30. The Royals took a loss in the first match by a score of 3-0 (11-25, 22-25, 25-27) before a four-set battle against the Greyhounds would end in a 3-1 defeat (19-25, 25-17, 23-25, 21-25).

ROYAL RUNDOWN WIDGET

The first match began with a difficult first set for Queens, where they struggled to establish their offense in the 25-11 defeat. East Carolina's strong defensive play and efficient attack were key in keeping Queens at bay. However, the Royals regrouped in the second set — led by Jordyn Johnson who recorded seven kills and nine digs, Queens pushed East Carolina much harder but still fell short by a 25-22 score. The third set was the most competitive of the match, with Queens pushing East Carolina to the limit. Multiple tie scores and lead changes kept the set close, but East Carolina managed to edge out Queens with a 27-25 victory.

Queens' defense was bolstered by senior Kayla McDuffie, who contributed two blocks, while fellow senior Alleigh Johnson added three kills. Despite their efforts, the Royals couldn't overcome the Pirate offense led by Francesca McBride and Carlia Northcross.

In the second match of the day, Loyola Maryland secured a 3-1 victory over the Royals. The match featured numerous lead changes and tight sets, particularly in the first and third. Despite Queens' efforts, Loyola's offense held out to the final. The match opened with Loyola taking the first set 25-19, showcasing a 17-kill performance. Queens responded fiercely in the second set, winning 25-17 as senior Jesse George led the charge with key service aces and A. Johnson contributed significantly on the attack to level the playing field. The third set was a nail-biter, with both teams exchanging leads multiple times. Loyola eventually edged out Queens 25-23, thanks to key plays from Kacy Sekunda and Lauren Link. The fourth set followed a similar pattern, with Loyola pulling ahead late with crucial blocks to win 25-21 and secure the match.

Queens had standout performances from J. Johnson who recorded 11 kills, and freshman Marlee Cook who notched 27 assists. However, their efforts were matched by Loyola's balanced attack, with four players achieving double-digit kills. Loyola's aggressive serving also played a crucial role, as they registered 10 service aces throughout the match.
