CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Royals (1-1) welcomed Elon University (1-1) to Dickson Field this evening, defeating the Phoenix 15-10 in their first home game of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as Elon led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. The Royals would respond in the second, outscoring Elon 4-2 to take a 5-4 lead at the halftime break.
Kayleen Favreau quickly scored twice in the third to extend the Royals' lead to three, 7-4, before the Phoenix answered with a pair of their own to close the gap to one. The back-and-forth scoring runs continued as the period ended with the score tied at 9-9. However, the final 15 minutes of play was all Queens as they outscored Elon 6-1 to secure their first win of the season.
KEY STATS & NOTES
- Kayleen Favreau totaled five goals and two assists to lead the Royals in points with seven. Ainsley Thurston also scored five goals while also recording three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
- Maura O'Donoghue and Jordan Tandler each added two goals. O'Donoghue also tallied four draw controls.
- Caroline Kraemer earned her first win of the season in goal after recording eight saves.
- Caitlin Walsh took the loss in goal for Elon after totaling 11 saves.
- The Phoenix had five players score two goals each.
- Queens outshot Elon 36-31, putting 26 shots on goal compared to the Phoenix's 18 shots on goal.
- The Royals also won the battle for ground balls (19-10) but lost the battle for draw controls (20-12).
