THE SHORT STORY
The Queens University Royals cruised to a 97-29 victory over Wesleyan CollegeĀ in a women's basketball contest Saturday afternoon in Curry Arena. For the second straight year the Royals have defeated the Wolves by 60-point margin. With the win the Royals improved to 1-1 overall, while Wesleyan dropped to 0-1 in their season opener.Ā

"I couldn't be prouder of our defensive effort today. I thought we had a better sense of urgency. We will continue to make this urgency the focal point. As a team, I thought we shared the ball well and had a balanced attack on offense. We must build on this and clean some things up as we move forward and continue to close the gap."Ā

BY THE NUMBERSĀ 
- Mikiya House caught fire late in the game to lead all players with 20 points on 8-9 shooting, going 3-3 from behind the arc. House added seven rebounds in 11 minutes of action.Ā 

- Every Royal played and scored in the contest. Jordyn Weaver contributed 13 points in her second start of the season. Kaitlyn Adams set a new career high in points (12), rebounds (4), and steals (2). Ā 

- Jermany Mapp, Ana Barreto, and Dayuna Colvin finished with 10 points each in their second straight start. Mapp turned in 26 minutes of action to lead all players. Colvin dished out a team high seven assists.Ā 

- The Royals bench contributed 51 points. Alyssa Lewis added two of the eight made threes for the Royals. Magda Freire added four points, Tamar Kopilevech finished with three, while Tiziana Huici, Shanelle Smith, and Kamara Mills each added two points.Ā .Ā 

- Defensively, Magda Freire and Dayuna Colvin finished with three steals each. Queens ran away with 42 points off turnovers. The Royals defensive effort forced 18 turnovers, leading to 26 fast break points. Ā 

NOTABLE MOMENTSĀ 
- Queens controlled the pace of the game from the opening minutes. Jermany Mapp got the Royals offense going by making the back-to-back lay ups in the first two minutes of play. Jordyn Weaver extended the Royals lead to seven after going on a 6-0 solo scoring run. Ā 

- The Royals held the Wolves scoreless the final four minutes of the first quarter and closed out the first quarter up 19-4, the smallest deficit for Wesleyan the rest of the way.Ā 

- The Royals outscored Wesleyan 32-6 in the second quarter, riding a 20-point scoring run. Queens shotĀ 58.8 percent in the second quarter to take a 51-10 advantage going into the halftime break.Ā 

- Mikiya House was hotĀ from behind the arc, making back to back three pointers in under 30 seconds in the final minutes of the game. Ā

INSIDE THE BOXSCOREĀ 
- The Royals have now won three straight home openers. The 68-point victory is the largest margin of victory in the Division I and Jen Brown era. Ā 

- 29 points is the least number of points Queens has held an opponent in the Division I era. The Royals held Pfeiffer University to 29 points in 2022.Ā 

- Queens held Wesleyan scoreless for over six minutes in the first half.Ā

"I felt like my old self again today. I could hear my teammates pushing me on from the bench so it just gave me confidence. Once I made my first three, I did not hesitate to shoot it when I made the second one on the fast break."Ā 

NEXT UPĀ 
The Royals are back in Curry Arena in a non-conference match up against Winthrop University on Wednesday. The match up between the Royals and Eagles will be the fourth in the series history, with Queens taking the last contest 64-61 in Rock Hill last season.Ā Wednesday afternoon contest is also the Myers Park Traditional game, withĀ tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m. in Curry Arena.
