THE SHORT STORY
The Winthrop University Eagles outscored the Queens Royals 37-26 in the second half Monday afternoon en route to a 69-52 victory in a non-conference women's basketball contest in Curry Arena. The Eagles improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Royals fell to 1-2.
BY THE NUMBERS
-Senior guard, Aylesha Wade had 15 points, three rebounds, and two steals to lead the Royals.
-Jordyn Weaver finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 32 minutes of action. Weaver has now scored double figures in all three games this season for the Royals.
-Shanelle Smith contributed 9 points and four rebounds off the bench for Queens. The Royals finished with 14 bench points.
-Winthrop's Marissa Gasaway lead all players with 23 points and 15 rebounds.
NOTABLE MOMENTS
-Queens jumped out to an early lead after three straight Aylesha Wade baskets in the first period.
-After being down 16-14 at the end of the first, the Royals capitalized on a Jordyn Weaver jumper and free throws by Aylesha Wade to tie things up at 18-18. Later in the second period the Eagles sparked a 9-0 scoring run, closing out the first half with a 32-26 lead.
-Queens cut the lead down to eight points in the second half but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. Winthrop led by as many as 20 points to close out the game.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
-The Royals struggled offensively, attempting a season high 66 shots, making 31.8 percent from the floor and 5-16 from deep. Queens also struggled from the free throw line making five of 12 attempts at the charity stripe.
-Winthrop won the rebounding battle 49-40. The Eagles finished with 16 offensive boards, leading to 14 second chance points.
-This is the first Queens loss to Winthrop since 1992.
NEXT UP
The Royals will remain at home for a Monday night contest against visiting Longwood. This is the first time the two teams will meet since 2004 when Longwood earned a 71-60 victory over the Royals. Queens and Longwood are tied at 14 in the series history. The Royals have lost the last five meetings against the Lancers, with the last Royals victory dating back to 2002 in Farmville, Va.
