Six Run Fifth Inning Propels Royals Past UNC Asheville on Tuesday Night

The Short Story: The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team evened the season series with UNC Asheville on Tuesday night with an 8-5 victory on the road.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

-UNC Asheville got the scoring started in the top of the first inning with a leadoff home run from Kohl Abrams.

-The Bulldogs would add four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 5-0.

-Queens would crack the scoring column in the top of the fourth inning as Nick Brassington blasted a solo home run off the scoreboard in left-center.

-The Royals would erupt in the top of the fifth inning and plate six runs on three hits. Sam Hunter would open the inning and reach on a throwing error. Tyler Peters and Riley Cheek would reach on back-to-back walks to load the bases with no outs. Following a pitching change, Christian Maggio greeted the new arm with a grand slam to right center tying the game 5-5. The Bulldogs would pick up consecutive outs before JD Coleman sent a 3-2 single into right center. The base knock set Andrew McDermott up for a two-run moonshot to right field for the 7-5 lead.

-Queens would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth behind three two-out hits. Nick Brassington got it started with a two-out double to left field before JD Coleman singled through the right side for an RBI.

BY THE NUMBERS
-Senior Nick Brassington led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance, including his seventh home run of the season. The Raleigh native has recorded 16 multi-hit performances on the year as he is riding a seven-game hitting streak.

-Christian Maggio blasted his fourth home run of the season to kickstart the scoring in the fifth inning. The grand slam was Maggio's first career as he extended his hitting streak to seven games.

-Sophomore Andrew McDermott blasted his third home run of the season with a two-run shot in the fifth inning. The Little Falls, N.J. native finished 2-for-5 as he has homered in back-to-back games.

-Rookie JD Coleman turned in his seventh multi-hit performance of the year with a 2-for-5 day, including an RBI.

-Tyler Peters, Nick Melton, and Sam Hunter added a hit on the day.

-Senior Daniel Bagwell was flawless out of the bullpen tossing 5.0 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. The veteran picked up his third win of the season.

-Queens played mistake-free baseball committing zero errors for the 12th game this season, including their third straight.

-The Royals are playing their best baseball at the end of the season with a 9-5 record in their last 14 games.


NEXT UP
The Royals will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a three-game series against the Stetson Hatters. The series will begin on Thursday, May 18th at 6:00 p.m. from The Stick. Game two will be on Friday at 6:00 p.m. with the season finale on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Before the Saturday game, the Royals will celebrate and honor their 2023 senior class. All three games will be broadcasted live on ESPN Plus.
