Jeffery Maidhof Hurls Complete Game as Royals Blast North Florida Securing First ASUN Series

The Short Story: The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team plated 10 runs over the final three innings to take down the North Florida Ospreys in the weekend series opener.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

-North Florida would strike first in the bottom of the first inning with three runs on four hits and a Royals error. The inning was highlighted by a one-out double which brought home three Osprey runners.

-Queens would get on the board in the top of the fourth inning after Andrew McDermott and Riley Cheek worked back-to-back walks to open the inning. JJ Sousa made the Ospreys pay with an RBI single through the right side.

-The Ospreys would extend their lead in the fifth inning as Alex Lodise belted a two-run home run to right center.

-Queens cut into the deficit in the top of the seventh with three runs on three hits and an Osprey error. Nick Melton ripped a one-out single into left-center and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. Andrew McDermott would follow it up with an RBI single into right field before Riley Cheek smoked a two-run blast to left field.

-North Florida would respond in the bottom half with back-to-back home runs to grow their lead to 7-4.

-The Royals erupted in the top of the eighth inning with five runs to grab their first lead of the game. Zach Weston opened the inning with a pinch-hit walk before Christian Maggio was hit by a pitch. Tyler Peters would drop a bunt and reach loading the bases with no outs. Nick Brassington would lace an RBI single to left field before Nick Melton smoked a two-run single into right-center. Dillon Lewis worked a pinch-hit walk and Connor Manco worked a one-out walk for an RBI which gave the Royals the lead. JJ Sousa would add an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to right field to round out the scoring.

-After the Ospreys tied it up in the bottom of the eighth, the Royals answered in the top of the ninth with two runs. After Tyler Peters opened the inning with a walk, freshman Sam Hunter smoked a double down the left-field line. Riley Cheek would follow it up with a two-run double to left center giving the Royals an 11-9 lead.

BY THE NUMBERS
-Royals starter Kei Yamagishi tossed a season-high 6.0 innings and surrendered five runs on nine hits and struck out three Ospreys.

-Four Royals, including Riley Cheek, JJ Sousa, Nick Brassington, and Nick Melton recorded multi-hit performances. The four leaders combined for nine runs driven in as Cheek led the way with four RBIs.

-Andrew McDermott, Sam Hunter, and Tyler Peters added a base hit on the day.

-Senior Justin Offschanka worked a scoreless ninth inning surrendering a hit for his second save of the season.

-Queens improved to 7-3 on the season when scoring 10 or more runs in a single game.

The Short Story: Senior Jeffery Maidhof led the Royals to their first ASUN series victory with a complete game performance in game two of the weekend series.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

-North Florida would get the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a run on three hits. Alex Lodise doubled to center field bringing home the first run of the game.

-Queens would answer in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs. Christian Maggio opened the inning with a single to right field before Nick Brassington roped a two-run home run down the left-field line to tie the game 2-2.

-The Royals would capture the lead in the top of the fifth as Riley Cheek belted a solo home run to center field.

-In the following inning, Nick Brassington blasted his second home run of the game with a solo shot to left field to give the Royals a 4-2 lead.

-The Royals erupted in the top of the eighth inning with four runs on five hits. Christian Maggio led off the inning with a double before Tyler Peters brought him home with an RBI double. The Ospreys would retire the next two Royals before Queens went to work. Andrew McDermott worked a walk before Riley Cheek doubled to left field. Will Budnick followed it up with a two-run single to center field to cap the scoring.

BY THE NUMBERS
-Senior Jeffery Maidhof turned in a magnificent start for the Royals tossing a complete game. The performance marked a career-high as he became the second player in program history to hurl a complete game.

-Christian Maggio led the Royals offense with a 3-for-5 performance, including a double.

-Nick Brassington belted a pair of home runs for three RBIs as the senior is second on the team in home runs.

-Senior Riley Cheek recorded a 2-for-4 evening with two RBIs. The Shelby native has recorded a hit in 14 of the last 15 games as he leads the team with 26 extra-base hits.

-Will Budnick, JJ Sousa, and Tyler Peters also added multi-hit performances on the day. Sousa has notched multi-hit performances in the last three games as he has a hit in six of the last seven outings.

-The Royals are riding a three-game winning streak which is the longest of the season as they look to complete the sweep on Saturday.
