Royals Sweep North Florida with Clutch Swings in Final Innings

The Short Story: The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team used a timely offensive attack late in the game to complete the ASUN weekend sweep over the North Florida Ospreys.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

-Following four scoreless innings, the Royals struck first with two runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning. Nick Brassington laced a one-out double to left center to get the offense started. Andrew McDermott was hit by a pitch before Riley Cheek worked a walk. Dillon Lewis stepped in as a pinch hitter and ripped a two-run single through the left side.

-The Ospreys responded in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on three hits. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run to left field to give North Florida their first lead of the day.

-Queens tied it back up in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of extra-base hits. Zach Weston ripped a leadoff double down the right field line before Nick Brassington smoked an RBI double down the left field line. North Florida would use a three-run bottom half to regain a 6-3 lead.

-The Royals would add a pair in the top of the eighth inning on three hits and an Ospreys error. Zach Weston ripped a one-out double to left center. Tyler Peters laced an RBI single through the right side with two outs before Nick Brassington walked. Nick Melton would follow it up with a single through the left side, scoring Tyler Peters as obstruction was called at third base.

-Queens would take the lead in the top of the ninth inning with clutch swings. Dillon Lewis roped a one-out double to right center putting the tying run in scoring position. Following a lineout from JJ Sousa, senior Zach Weston worked a walk. Both runners would advance on a wild pitch before Christian Maggio dropped a single into left field scoring both Royals for the 7-6 lead.

BY THE NUMBERS
-Five Royals turned in multi-hit performances, including Dillon Lewis, JJ Sousa, Zach Weston, Tyler Peters, and Nick Brassington. Sousa has recorded multi-hit games in four straight games while Brassington finished the weekend with three extra-base hits and five RBIs.

-Tyler Peters led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance, including a run and an RBI.

-Christian Maggio and Nick Melton added a hit on the day.

-Royals starter Zach Kelly worked 5.0 innings and surrendered three runs on seven hits while matching his season-high with six strikeouts.

-Justin Offschanka worked a pair of scoreless relief innings to pick up his third save of the year.

-Queens scattered 13 hits marking the fourth consecutive game that they totaled 10 or more hits.

-The Royals picked up their first Division 1 sweep, and the first since May 22-23.

-Queens has won four straight ahead of a busy upcoming week.


NEXT UP
The Royals will return to Charlotte and prepare for a five-game stretch next week which features four home games. Queens will welcome Davidson on Tuesday, May 2nd for a non-conference game at The Stick. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The Royals will travel to USC Upstate on Wednesday for a non-conference outing with the Spartans. Queens will return home for the weekend as they welcome Eastern Kentucky University for a three-game ASUN series.
