Career-Night from Blake Efird and Dominant Offense Propels Royals Past North Carolina A&T

The Short Story: The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team took down the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Tuesday night as five Royals turned in multi-hit performances.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Queens jumped on the Aggies in the top of the first inning with three runs on three hits. Riley Cheek worked a one-out walk before the Royals went to work with two outs. JJ Sousa singled up the middle before Nick Alderfer singled up the middle for an RBI. A wild pitch would bring Sousa home before Christian Maggio singled to left field plating Alderfer for the 3-0 lead.

-North Carolina A&T would answer in the bottom of the first inning with a run on a one-out RBI double to right center.

-The Royals would add a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the third. Again, Queens did their damage with two outs as Nick Alderfer laced an RBI double to left field before Christian Maggio singled into left field for an RBI.

-Queens extended their lead to 6-1 in the top of the fourth as JJ Sousa laced a single into left field bringing home Andrew McDermott.

-North Carolina A&T cut into the deficit with a one-out solo home run in the sixth inning.

-The Royals would erupt in the ninth and put the game out of reach with four runs on four hits. Tyler Peters and Zach Weston opened the inning with back-to-back doubles before Nick Melton singled to the pitcher. A sacrifice bunt from Andrew McDermott advanced the runners up before Riley Cheek walked. Nick Brassington would lace a double down the left field line bringing home two runs before JJ Sousa hit a sacrifice fly to center field for the final run.

BY THE NUMBERS
-Sophomore Blake Efird matched his career-high with 5.1 innings pitched in his second career start. Efird surrendered four hits, two runs, and struck out a career-high five Aggies as he picked up his first career victory.

-Five Royals, including JJ Sousa, Nick Alderfer, Christian Maggio, Tyler Peters, and Zach Weston turned in multi-hit performances. The four Royals combined for seven RBIs on the night.

-Andrew McDermott, Riley Cheek, Nick Brassington, and Nick Melton added a base hit on the evening.

-The Royals bullpen was lockdown holding the Aggies scoreless over the remaining 3.2 innings. Isaiah Bennett, Joseph Rodriguez, Kei Yamagishi, and Brandon Dahlman combined to strike out a pair while surrendering one hit.

-Queens finished with 14 hits on the night, including five doubles which marked the most extra-base hits in a game since March 29th against App State.

-The Royals grinded at-bats with two outs and plated 7-of-12 runs with two outs. Queens hit .615 with runners in scoring position on the night.

-The Royals improved to 6-3 on the season when scoring 10 or more runs in a game.
