Weston Blasts a Pair of Home Runs in Royals Series Opener with Lipscomb

The Short Story: The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped the weekend opener with the Lipscomb Bisons despite blasting four home runs on the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-After both offenses went scoreless in the first inning, the two league foes combined to score eight runs in the second inning. The Bisons capitalized with four runs on three hits and two errors. Queens would answer in the bottom half with a four spot as Nick Melton belted a grand slam to left field following three walks.

-Lipscomb would add four more runs in the third inning behind four hits, including a pair of home runs. Queens managed to respond immediately as Zach Weston smoked a home run to right center.

-Queens would cut into the deficit in the fourth inning as Christian Maggio blasted the game's sixth home run down the right field line.

-The visiting Bisons would answer immediately in the fifth inning with a leadoff home run from Austin Kelly. Three batters later, Parks Bouck sent a two-out home run to left field.

-Lipscomb would tack on three runs on two hits in the top of the sixth inning. With a runner on second base and one out, Trace Willhoite ripped an RBI double into left center. A one-out walk led to an Austin Kelly RBI single into right field to extend the lead to 12-6. With the bases loaded, Chaz Bertolani worked an RBI walk.

-Queens managed to respond in the bottom half of the sixth inning with two runs on one hit. With the bases loaded and one out, Zach Weston earned an RBI walk before Riley Cheek brought another runner in with a groundout to second base.

-Lipscomb would add a pair in the top of the seventh inning with a two-run home run to left field extending their lead to 15-8.

-Queens would round out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning as Zach Weston belted his second home run of the night to right center.

 

BY THE NUMBERS
-Senior Zach Weston finished the night 2-for-5, including a pair of home runs, and matched his career-high with four RBIs.

-Christian Maggio turned in his third multi-hit outing of the season with a 2-for-4 evening. On defense, the senior threw out a pair of Bisons base stealers.

-JJ Sousa, Tyler Cotto, Tyler Peters, and Nick Melton each added a hit on the night. Sousa has posted a hit in six of the last seven games. Senior Nick Melton made his return to the lineup after missing the last 11 games with an injury. Melton capitalized with a grand slam in the second inning.

-Sophomore Blake Efird worked an efficient and scoreless 2.0 innings of relief while striking out two Bisons.

-The double-digit runs scored marked the 13th time this season that the Royals pitching staff has allowed 10 or more runs in a game.

-Queens issued 11 walks on the evening marking the fifth time this season that the Royals have surrendered double-digit free passes.

-The six home runs surrendered by the Royals staff were the most in a single game.
