Royals Collect Third Straight Win Defeating Eagles at Home

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team (3-3) picked up its third consecutive win this evening defeating Winthrop (2-3) by a score of 17-6. It is the first time since the Royals' DI transition that they have led by as much as 10 points to force the running clock.  
 
How It Happened
After the Eagles struck first with a goal at 13:52, Queens' Maura O'Donoghue quickly tied the game up, starting a 4-0 run for the Royals. Leading 5-3 at the start of the second, Queens would put three straight balls in the back of the cage to lead 8-3 with 9:48 on the clock. At the half, the Royals led 10-4.
 
Queens continued to build upon its lead in the third outscoring the Eagles, 5-2, to take a 15-6 lead heading into the final quarter. Caroline Pearce's second goal in a row at 7:45 in the fourth would put the Royals in front by 10 and a fast-break goal from Elise Grissett in the closing minutes gave the game its final score, 17-6.
 
Key Stats & Notes
  • Shannon Kingston and Kaylee Favreau led the Royals with three goals each in the win. O'Donoghue totaled two goals and two assists to lead with four points while Grissett tallied two goals and one assist for three points.
  • Stephanie Joyce and Pearce recorded two goals each while Alexi Flores, Isabella Swanson, and Jillian Gironda scored one goal apiece.
  • On the defensive end, Grace Guglielmo tallied six caused turnovers and five ground balls. Colby Dugdale totaled four draw controls to lead the Royals in the category.
  • Junior goalkeeper Caroline Kraemer tallied today's win in goal after recording two saves in 30 minutes of action. Sharn Muffett totaled eight saves in 30 minutes of action.
  • Maddy Hodgson took the loss in goal for Winthrop after totaling two saves in 18:21. Emma Calhoun totaled nine saves in 41:39.
  • Ellie Dutton and Molly Dankowski each totaled two goals to lead Winthrop.
  • Queens outshot Winthrop, 34-19, putting 28 shots on goal compared to the Eagles' 16 shots on goal.
  • Queens also won the battle for ground balls, 27-16, while the battle in the draw circle was even, 13-13.
 
 
Coach's Quote
"These girls were on a roll tonight," head coach Kelly McQuilkin stated. "We had nine different goal scorers; we caused 19 turnovers, so really just proud of the effort we put out for the full 60."
