Men's Rugby Defeats Mary Washington in Senior Day Battle

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's rugby team held their Senior Day festivities on Saturday afternoon as they took on Mary Washington in the final match of the regular season. The Royals defeated the Eagles 37-28 in a battle that saw both teams go on different scoring runs. With the victory, the Royals improve to 4-4 on the season while Mary Washington falls to 4-3. 

Turning Point

Queens jumped to an early 7-3 lead over Mary Washington which was then followed by several scores from Mary Washington which led to an 18-10 lead for the Eagles. In the 32nd minute of the first half, however, Landon Starnes recorded a score that cut the Royals deficit to 18-17. Several minutes later, the Royals broke through during a scrum near the Eagles' end zone which added another score and gave the Royals a 24-18 lead which they held until halftime. 

 

The Eagles retook the advantage after two scores to begin the second half but the lead did not last long after the Royals added a 7-point score following a strong run to take a 31-28 lead in the 71st minute. A couple of three-point scores in the final 10 minutes gave Queens a 37-28 lead which they would go on to win by.
