Royals Shutout Gamecocks in Strong Second Half Showing

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (1-5 overall, 0-1 ASUN) dropped a non-conference Tuesday tilt at the University of South Carolina (4-3-1 overall, 0-0 SUN BELT) by a final score of 3-1. Despite the loss, the Royals made significant adjustments in the final 65 minutes of the match and shutout the Gamecocks in the second half.

Turning Point
The turning point of the evening proved to be the Gamecocks ability to jump on the board early by scoring three goals in the opening 25 minutes. In that span, South Carolina ripped seven shots. However, the Royals defense adjusted and held the Gamecocks to eight shots in the final 65 minutes of action.
 
Key Stats & Notes
  • Mario Goic scored his team-best third goal in the 43rd minute. The Croatia native has three goals in the last two matches. The last Royal to net goals in back-to-back games was Felipe Mendonca last season when the veteran scored four goals in two games on Oct. 13 and Oct. 16.
  • The Royals attack was persistent in the second half winning the shooting battle 7-6. The 12 total shots were the second most shots this season for Queens while the five shots on goal are a season-high.
  • ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week Javier Izquierdo-Cuervo picked up a season-high seven saves on the evening.
  • Sophomore Samuel Idinge tallied his first career assist by finding Mario Goic at the top of the box for the Royals lone goal.
  • Matheus Pereira, Louis Goldsack, Gaston Moise, and Felipe Mendonca posted shots in the match, including a pair from Mendonca.
  • Both teams were even generating five corner kick opportunities.
  • The match was physical seeing 24 total fouls and five yellow cards.

Queens will wrap up their road stretch on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they travel to Nashville for a conference clash at No. 21 Lipscomb. Kick off is slated for 8:00 p.m. and can be viewed on YouTube. Following the road match, the Royals will return to Dickson Field for a non-conference match against Wofford College on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
