CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (0-1) suffered a season opening loss to the University of Memphis (1-0) by a final score of 5-0 at the UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic in Birmingham, Ala. The Royals will turn their attention to a Sunday showdown with the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 3:30 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcasted live on ESPN+.

Turning Point
The turning point of the match proved to be the Tigers late first half goal in the 44
th minute. Despite trailing 2-0, Queens put together a few scoring opportunities in the opening half, but were unable to cash in. With a minute left until halftime, Memphis netted their third goal of the evening and took the first half momentum into the break.
Key Stats & Notes
- The match was slow to start as neither offense managed to get a shot off until the opening goal in the 18th minute by the Tigers. Memphis starter Hayden Anderson put a shot on goal which was initially saved by Royals keeper Javier Cuervo, but after rebounding away Anderson was able to put the second chance opportunity away giving Memphis a 1-0 lead.
- The best scoring opportunity for Queens came at the end of the first half when the Royals earned a corner kick following a Mario Goic shot. Off the corner, Matias Vilchez ripped a shot at the bottom left corner which the Tigers keeper managed to save.
- Queens managed to take six shots in the opener and placed three on target. Mario Goic led the charge for the Royals taking a pair of shots on putting one on target.
- The high-wired Memphis offense took 17 shots on the evening, including 12 on target.
- 19 Royals saw the pitch in the season opener, including five freshmen.
