CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte head men's basketball coach,
Grant Leonard, continues to bolster his coaching staff with success for the upcoming season as he announced the addition of Sean McClurg to the program. McClurg comes to the Queen City with a championship background of success and a proven track record of developing athletes for the professional ranks, including 24 professional players and five NBA players.
"Sean McClurg really stood out in the hiring process because of 4 key traits: being involved in winning programs, helping develop professional players, desire to be player forward and an ability to process numbers and analytics at an elite level," explained Leonard. "Sean is a rising star in the coaching business and we are very fortunate to have him join the Royal Family!"
McClurg joins the Royals staff after previously serving as the Video Coordinator on the New Mexico State Men's Basketball staff. With the Aggies, McClurg oversaw the film and scouting of team's and opponent's and delivered metrics to the Head Coach suggesting potential adjustments. McClurg used advanced analytics to coordinate practice plans while improving targeted areas for specific players. The Aggies made two NCAA Tournament appearances after winning a pair of WAC Tournament titles with McClurg on staff. McClurg assisted the Aggies in setting a school record 30 wins while also going unbeaten at 19-0 in league play.
Prior to his stint at New Mexico State, McClurg served as a graduate assistant with the Louisiana Tech Men's Basketball program. The Bloomfield, N.J. native assisted their analytics staff and developed new tools for the team's lineup combinations and shot efficiency. McClurg played a significant role in the development of All-Conference guard Jacobi Boykins and professional standout Jalen Harris.
McClurg began his coaching journey as a Student Manager on the Virginia Tech Men's Basketball staff under former Head Coach Buzz Williams. While attaining a Bachelor of Science in Computational Modeling and Data Analytics, McClurg assisted the Hokies in recruiting while also developing player-specific training plans based on shot chart tendencies and player efficiency metrics. While in Blacksburg, McClurg helped the Hokies make their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 10 years. Additionally, Virginia Tech set the most ACC wins in school history (10) in back-to-back seasons and took down perennial AP Top 5 teams in Duke and Virginia. McClurg assisted in the development of All-Conference players Justin Robinson and Kerry Blackshear, and NBA players in Justin Bibbs, Ahmed Hill, and Justin Robinson.
"I'm excited to join Coach Leonard's staff at Queens, a premier program for young men who want to further their development as basketball players and as people," said McClurg. "The standard that he and Coach Lundy have set over the past several years has resulted in Queens being among the most consistently successful programs in the country, regardless of level. I am looking forward to becoming part of that tradition, and to helping Coach Leonard and the student-athletes who decide to call Queens home in any way that I can."
The Royals are set to begin their first season at the Division I level as a member of the ASUN Conference. Queens is coming off a season in which the Royals posted a 30-4 overall record while making their seventh straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament and third Sweet 16 game in the past five seasons. The Royals finished with their highest end of regular season ranking in program history, checking in at No. 4 in both the NABC Coaches poll and the D2SIDA Media poll. The 30-win season marked the fourth time in the last six seasons that the Royals have reached the milestone.
