HICKORY, N.C. – The No. 1 Queens University of Charlotte Royals captured their eighth consecutive South Atlantic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship title this afternoon defeating No. 19 Wingate University by a score of 21-5. The win also helps Queens remain undefeated on the year at 19-0 as they head into NCAA postseason play in a few weeks.
Kyleigh Masteran led the Royals in goals, scoring five to become Queens' all-time leader in the category with 187 in her career. She also recorded her 100
th point this season in the win.
Kaitlyn Hardin led in points with six on four goals and two assists while
Shannon Donovan added five points on three goals and two assists. Donovan also recorded three caused turnovers and one ground ball in the victory and was named MVP of the Championships following the match.
Rebecca Kinsley also added five points on two goals and three assists while
Shannon Kingston recorded a hat trick.
The Royals dominated today's game from beginning to end, outshooting the Bulldogs 41-15 to put 30 shots on goal. Queens also won 24 of the game's 30 draw controls with
Sydney Hussey and
Sydney Bracken totaling nine and eight, respectively. Hussey also led in ground balls, totaling four of Queens' 20, while Bracken set a new season record for draw controls at Queens reaching 100 on the year.
Queens used a stellar first quarter of play to take control of today's Championship game early, scoring the first six goals of the match and never looking back. Wingate would find the back of the net at 2:14 for their first goal of the game but the damage had already been done as the Royals continued to stretch their lead with all the momentum on the offensive end.
Leading 8-1 heading into the second, Queens added four more goals to the board to take a 12-2 lead into the halftime break.
Out of the half, Wingate's Leah Knowles scored the first goal in the third at 11:17. Queens responded with five unanswered to take a 17-3 lead into the final 15 minutes of action.
In the fourth, the Bulldogs struck first again with back-to-back scores early before the Royals turned their defensive pressure back up and closed the game with a 4-0 run.
Caroline Kraemer earned today's win in goal after totaling nine saves, eight of which came in the first half. Her record on the year sits at 11-0.
Joining Donovan on the all-tournament team were Bracken, Hardin, Hussey, Kinsley, and Masteran. Bracken, Hardin, Kinsley, and Masteran earn the honor for the first time in their careers while Hussey is a three-time recipient and Donovan is a two-time recipient.
Queens will look to host the 2022 NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse South Region Championship on May 13-15. The NCAA Selection Show will take place on May 8 at 8:30 p.m. officially announcing site hosts and selections.
