Royals Claim Two in Queens Round Robin

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team extended its winning streak to three on Sunday afternoon after picking up two wins in the final Queens Round Robin. The Royals defeated West Liberty University, 5-4, and Alderson Broaddus University, 8-7, to collect the Sunday afternoon sweep. Queens improves to 15-11 with the pair of wins.

Game One: Queens 5 | West Liberty 4

Queens would find themselves down four runs at the bottom of the fourth inning following a Hilltoppers run in the top of the inning. Queens would cut the deficit in half by the end of the inning after a wild pitch allowed them to score two runs.

The Royals then took control of the game when freshman third baseman Jordyn Thompson blasted a three-run homer to left field to give the Royals their first lead in the ball game, 5-4. Ashlyn Mickler and Kayla Smith both scored on the play after recording hits prior to Thompson taking the plate.

Khristen McPherson then closed the game by striking out two to help the Royals secure the win. In total, McPherson struck out five batters to record her third win of the season.

Game Two: Queens 8 | Alderson Broaddus 7

The Royals bats got going early in game two as Gerlea Patton tripled to right field, recording two RBI and putting the Royals up 2-0 in the second. Kasidi Staley then plated Patton on a single to right field. Staley eventually scored the Royals' final run of the inning, unearned, after a fielding error by the Battlers' shortstop.

A two-RBI double from Haley Nelson in the fourth increased Queens' lead to six, 6-0, and an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth from Chloe Linton gave the game a 7-0 score.

The Battlers would finally get on the board in the sixth inning scoring two runs, and a home run from Nelson in the bottom looked to seal the deal as it gave the home team an 8-2 lead.

However, Alderson Broaddus had other plans, making a late-game push in the top of the seventh where they scored five runs. Following a pair of walks and a run, Nelson would step in to pitch for Jordan Dunn, who was eventually credited the win after striking out seven batters in the game. Hailee Culbe then homered to left-center field to record three RBI and close the gap to one, 8-7. Queens then held strong as Nelson struck out two to hold off the Battlers' rally.

Dunn moved to 6-6 on the year following the win.

Queens will be back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 9 when they host Newberry College. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
