Royals Fall in Conference Doubleheader with Newberry

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team moved to 2-2 in league play after falling to Newberry College (21-7, 2-2 SAC) at The Tuck by scores of 7-0 and 13-4. Queens now sits 15-13 on the season.

Game One: Newberry 7 | Queens 0

The Royals had a hard time getting on base in today's series opener, totaling just two hits in the game, both coming from Gerlea Patton. The fifth year recorded a single to third in the fourth and a single to the pitcher in the sixth.

The Wolves recorded six hits en route to plating seven to earn the win. Errors by the Royals in the second and third would contribute to the 5-0 lead Newberry was able to build early.

Kate Hunter moved to 6-4 on the year after recording the loss in two innings of play. Khristen McPherson and Haley Nelson also saw time in the pitching circle.

Kasey Widmyer was the winning pitcher for Newberry after playing all seven innings and striking out five batters.

Game Two: Newberry 13 | Queens 4

The Royals had much better luck at the plate in game two, recording eight hits and scoring four runs. However, the Wolves continued playing well on the day, recording 14 hits en route to scoring 13 runs for the win.

A home run in the top of the first for the Wolves put them on the board early, but the Royals had an answer in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on an error by Newberry's pitcher to score a pair of runs and move in front, 2-1.

A three-run homer from Newberry's Vanessa Wilson would return the lead to the Wolves in the top of the third, but Queens kept battling as Jordan Hunt recorded an RBI single to left field to plate Patton. Unfortunately, the Royals would close the inning leaving three on base which seemed to make all the difference in the game as Newberry scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take an 8-3 lead.

Queens would score once more in the fifth before the Wolves bats got hot again in the sixth and they closed the game plating five to extend their lead past eight runs.

Nelson led the Royals in game two with two hits while Jordan Dunn moved to 6-7 on the year after pitching three innings and striking out one batter. Hunter, McPherson, and Nelson also saw time in the pitching circle.

Queens will be back in action on Thursday, Mar. 10 when they travel to take on UNC Pembroke in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
