Royals Split with Crusaders on the Road

BELMONT, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (13-11, 2-0 SAC) traveled a short distance to Belmont Abbey College (13-4), splitting their weekend battle with the Crusaders on Saturday afternoon. After falling in game one, 3-1, the Royals would redeem themselves in game two winning 5-0.

Game One: Belmont Abbey 3 | Queens 1

Both squads would get off to a slow start in game one as the Royals' only run came from super senior Gerlea Patton in the third. Patton got on base after singling up the middle to get Queens started. She then advanced to second on a single from Kasidi Staley before stealing third. Patton would score on a throwing error by the Crusader's catcher.

Belmont Abbey answered back in the sixth inning, scoring three runs off two hits to take the win.

Kate Hunter pitched 5.1 innings in game one, striking out seven while allowing three hits and three runs. Hunter's record is now 6-3 on the season. Abbey Craver for the Crusaders recorded her seventh win of the season.

Game Two: Queens 5 | Belmont Abbey 0

Haley Nelson got the Royals started in game two with a two-run home run in the first inning. Queens then added to its lead in the third inning when Kaylee DeJesus sent one over the left-center fence to put the Royals on top 3-0.

Another home run then came in the sixth from the bat of Kayla Smith to give the Royals a comfortable 4-0 lead. Staley, wanting in on the action, then scored the final run of the day for Queens in the seventh on an RBI single from DeJesus.

Jordan Dunn improved her record to 5-6 on the season pitching all seven innings to strike out two and allow just one hit.

Queens will be back in action for their final Queens Round Robin tomorrow, Mar. 6. They will battle West Liberty University at 12:30 p.m. before taking on Alderson Broaddus University at 3 p.m.
