CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team, currently ranked 12
th nationally, improved to 4-0 on the season after collecting a 16-12 South Atlantic Conference win over Newberry College at Dickson Field.
Entering today's game having not ever beaten the Royals, the Wolves seemed to be playing with a chip on their shoulder as they scored three unanswered goals in the first to take a 3-2 lead at 7:22. The Royals would respond by adding three more points to the board, two coming from
Tyler Ewen, to make the score 5-3 heading into the second. Ewen finished the opening quarter with three goals.
In the second, Newberry played more aggressively on the offensive end, outscoring the Royals 6-4, to give the game a 9-9 score at the half.
The game remained evenly matched in the third as both teams scored two goals each to keep things knotted, 11-11, heading into the fourth.
Super senior
Kealan Pilon then took over in the fourth scoring three of the Royals' five goals in the period as they outscored the Wolves, 5-1, to seal the win in today's conference opener.
Pilon finished with nine points today on five goals and four assists while Ewen added seven points on four goals and three assists.
Jack Royer totaled three goals and two assists for five points. In goal,
William Powley completed play with 13 saves.
Though Queens outshot the Wolves, 45-37, both teams would put 25 shots on goal.
Mac Ryan, Scott Reed, and Curtis Bukta each recorded hat tricks for Newberry.
Queens will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 12 when they welcome Belmont Abbey College to Dickson Field for a 1 p.m. game.
