Royals Fall to No. 3 Wingate on the Road

WINGATE, N.C. – The 15th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team fell 18-11 to No. 3 Wingate University (6-1, 3-0) on the road this evening to move to 4-2 on the year and 1-1 in league play.
 
Kealan Pilon led the Royals with five goals and one assist for six points while Jack Royer added three goals and two assists for five points.
 
After Pilon and Royer teamed up to score the first goal of the night at 11:08 in the first, the Bulldogs responded with three in a row to take a 3-1 lead at 4:55. Queens would outscore Wingate 2-1 in the final minutes of the quarter to make it a one-goal game, 4-3, heading into the second.
 
Queens quickly put two in the back of the net early in the second to take a 5-4 lead before the Bulldogs answered with a pair of their own to regain control, 6-5, at 10:36. Wingate would go ahead 8-6 before the Royals closed the half with three unanswered goals to take a 9-8 lead into the half.
 
Out of the break, Queens struggled on the offensive end of the field scoring just two more goals in the second half as the Bulldogs kept in step scoring 10 more goals before the final horn sounded.
 
In goal, Wesley Wheat took the loss for Queens after totaling four saves. William Powley saw 36:28 in the cage to record nine saves.
 
The Royals were outshot 47-25 as the Bulldogs put 31 shots on goal compared to Queens' 16 shots on goal. Queens edged Wingate at the face-off, 17-15, but lost the battle for ground balls, 22-18.
 
Willie Grieco led the Bulldogs with 12 points on six goals and six assists while Danny Riley added five goals and one assist for six points. Adam Vodovnik and Bobby Padden each added three goals and one assist for four points.
 
Next, Queens will face Mars Hill on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Dickson Field.
