No. 4 Royals Set for Showdown with No. 5 Augusta in NCAA Southeast Region Finals

AUGUSTA, GA. – The No. 4 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (28-3, 21-3 South Atlantic Conference) is geared up to play No. 5 Augusta University (30-3, 15-3 Peach Belt Conference) in the NCAA Southeast Regional Finals tomorrow, March 15 at 7:00 p.m. inside Christenberry Fieldhouse in Augusta, Georgia. The Royals enter the championship on a 17-game winning streak which is a new program record for consecutive wins in a season. The Royals managed to down No. 12 Lincoln Memorial in the semifinals on Sunday afternoon behind a 51-percent shooting performance from the field. Kenny Dye led the Royals to victory with a game-high 22 points while adding five rebounds and three assists. Jay'Den Turner would add 16 points in the victory and Jamari Smith posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Tuesday night's meeting will mark the 6th contest between Queens and Augusta with the Jaguars holding a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series. After dropping the first three meetings, the Royals have won the last two meetings which have been Southeast Regional matchups. In their last meeting, Shaun Willett was unstoppable pouring in 33 points while hauling in 13 rebounds. Four Royals would reach double figures behind a 49-percent shooting effort. Queens dominated the paint scoring 56 points from down low, including 42 fast break points. Deana Williams was just short of a triple double for the Jaguars with 25 points, eight rebounds, and nine blocks. The Southeast Region Final will be a battle of scorching hot teams as the Royals enter Tuesday as winners of 17 straight games setting a program record for consecutive wins. Meanwhile, Augusta enters as winners of 16 straight, including a perfect 19-0 mark when playing inside Christenberry Fieldhouse.

  • In the season opener against Young Harris, the Royals set a new program record with 133 points scored as eight Royals finished with double figures.
  • Head Coach Bart Lundy picked up his 400th career victory in the dominant season opener. Lundy is in his 14th season at Queens and 20th season overall as a collegiate head coach.
  • The Royals are coming off their program record 17th straight victory on Sunday night when they took down No. 12 Lincoln Memorial, 81-76 in the NCAA Southeast Region semifinals. In the victory, the Royals shot 51-percent from the field, including 34 points in the paint. Queens managed to utilize their deep bench and outscore the Railsplitters 19-7. Kenny Dye led the Royals with a game-high 22 points while also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists. Jay'Den Turner would add 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Jamari Smith would post another double-double with 12 points and a game-best 10 rebounds. The sophomore added a team-high four assists.
  • Queens is a perfect 26-0 this season when leading at the half and 23-0 when scoring at least 80 points. When the Royals shoot better than 45-percent, they are 20-0.
  • Jamari Smith has led the Royals all season long, scoring 17.2 points per game and ripping down 7.0 rebounds per game.  Smith has collected ten double-doubles this season increasing his career total to 15. The forward has been named South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week four times this season. He is the only player in the conference given the AstroTurf Player of the Week more than twice this season and becomes the first Royal in program history to receive the honor four times in a season.
  • Queens has been efficient distributing the ball this season as seven Royals are averaging at least 7.0 points per game. Veteran guard Kenny Dye facilitates the offense and is second in the conference with 5.2 assists per game. He is also the conference's best three-point shooter, cashing in 49-percent of the time from deep, helping him tally 14.2 points per game.
  • Crashing the glass continues to be a priority for Bart Lundy's team as they are sixth in the country in rebounding margin, outrebounding opponents by 9.0 per game. They are sixth with 14.32 offensive rebounds per game. Gavin Rains has been physical on the block pulling down a 7.2 rebounds per contest, including 3.2 offensive boards.
  • The Royals are No. 14 in the nation in scoring offense averaging 86.0 points per game.
  • Queens has displayed their depth as 11 Royals are averaging at least 8.0 minutes per game.
  • Jamari Smith and Kenny Dye were both named SAC First Team All-Conference. In the D2CCA All-Region awards, Jamari Smith earned First Team All-Region praise and Kenny Dye earned Second Team honors. Smith was awarded Conference Player of the Year as the Jonesboro, Ga. native is averaging 17.2 points per game while hauling in 7.0 rebounds per game. He became the fourth Royal to be named Conference Player of the Year, and the first since 2018-19. Kenny Dye earned First Team nods following a season in which he averaged 14.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. The junior was second in the conference in assists per game and top 25 nationally.
  • Junior guard Kenny Dye notched his 1,000th career point in the 80-72 victory over Wingate on Dec. 15. Dye became the 19th player in program history to hit the 1K mark.
  • Sophomore forward Jamari Smith scored his 1,000th career point in the 99-67 victory over UVA Wise on Jan. 31. Smith became the 20th player in program history to hit the 1K mark and second this season after Kenny Dye
  • The Royals opened the new season with a dominant 133-80 victory over Young Harris. The milestone victory was head coach Bart Lundy's 400th career win and the most points scored in program history.
  • Jamari Smith and Kenny Dye were both named to the 2022 Bevo Francis Top 50 Watch List, as announced by Small College Basketball on Tuesday, Feb. 15. The award is presented to one player who had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball.

Augusta University (30-3, 15-3 Peach Belt Conference)
  • The top seeded Augusta Jaguars enter the regional finals on a 16-game winning streak, including a perfect 19-0 record inside Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jaguars managed to drop Flagler College for the Peach Belt Conference finals before storming past Belmont Abbey and UNC Pembroke in the NCAA First and Second round games.
  • The Jaguars possess one of the best scoring offenses pouring in 83.5 points per game which ranks No. 26 in the country. Augusta is a highly efficient offensively shooting 49-percent from the field and 43-percent from behind the arc. The Jaguars have cleaned the glass all season outrebounding opponents by 6.1 per game for 38.3 rebounds per game. While forcing 6.2 steals per game, Augusta has made teams pay for turning the ball over with 16.0 points per game. On defense, the host team is surrendering 65.5 points per game on 39-percent shooting from the field and 32-percent from behind the arc.
  • Augusta possesses a deep squad as nine players are averaging at least 10.0 minutes per game. On offense, four Jaguars are pouring in double digit scoring. Peach Pelt Conference Co-Player of the Year, Tyshaun Crawford is the leader for the Jaguars scoring 17.5 points per game while pulling down 8.2 rebounds and adding 2.2 blocks per contest. Miguel Arnold adds 13.7 points, Troy Cracknell is posting 13.1, and Ja'Queze Kirby rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.6 points. Augusta's offense exploded early in the season for 126 points against Allen on Dec. 4, 2021.
  • Jaguars Head Coach Dip Metress is in his 18th season at the helm of Augusta. Metress is 398-146 as the Jaguars leader.
  • The Jaguars were picked to finish 2nd in the Peach Belt Conference Preseason Poll following a 9-7 season. Augusta returned their top three scorers from last season.
