AUGUSTA Ga. – The Queens University softball team (6-6) traveled to Augusta, Ga., to take on the Augusta University Jaguars (8-6) this afternoon. The Royals would split the series with the Jaguars suffering a 4-1 loss in game one before taking game two, 5-0, at Jaguar Field.
Game One: Augusta 4 Queens 1
Queens carded four hits to Augusta's seven in the opening game of the series. Shortstop
Kayla Smith led recording a hit, run, and RBI after hitting a home run in the top of the second.
The Jaguars got on the board first with two runs in the first inning. Olivia Biles would record the RBI on the first run on a double before scoring Augusta's second run on a single from Lauren Evens. Smith's home run would bring the Royals within one, 2-1, but Queens' next two batters were struck out.
Evens recorded her second RBI of the game in the third to put Augusta in front 3-1, and their final run would come in fifth on a home run from Shelbie Summerlin.
Kate Hunter pitched the entire game for the Royals, striking out seven batters while surrendering seven hits for four runs. She now sits 3-1 on the year. Mary Tillman secured the win for the Jaguars after recording nine strikeouts.
Game Two: Queens 5 Augusta 0
Queens would flip the script in game two recording seven hits to Augusta's four.
Kasidi Staley hit a perfect 3-for-3 to record two RBI and one run while
Ashlyn Mickler hit 2-for-3 at the plate to record one RBI and two runs. Mickler's RBI would come on a a home run in the fourth which was the first home run of her collegiate career.
The Royals got going in the top of the second when a passed ball with bases loaded brought
Jordyn Thompson home for an unearned run. Staley then stepped up to hit a two-run double to make the score 3-0. An RBI single would follow for
Kaylee DeJesus allowing the Royals to take a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Mickler's historic home run would come in the top of the fourth to give the game its final score of 5-0.
Jordan Dunn pitched all seven innings and struck out four batters to move to 2-4 on the year. Maggie McBrayer took the loss for the Jaguars.
The Royals will be back in action tomorrow, Feb. 20, at home as they host the second Queens Round Robin taking on the Southern New Hampshire University and the University of Mount Olive. Games are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The Royals will play the Penmen at 12:30 p.m. and the Trojans at 3 p.m.
