Royals Collect Two Wins in Sunday Round Robin

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (8-6) hosted the Southern New Hampshire University (0-6) and the University of Mount Olive (9-1) in Queens' second Round Robin of the season on Sunday at The Tuck, defeating the Penmen, 11-3, and the Trojans, 3-2.
 
Game One: Queens 11 | SNH 3

The Penmen would book a home run from Alyssa DiMauro to get her squad started, before scoring again to take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Queens quickly answered in the bottom of as Hayley Nelson stepped up to the plate to send one over the center-field fence, recording two RBI and tying the game, 2-2.
 
Queens would really open the game up in the second scoring four runs. A bunt single from Ashlyn Mickler would turn into a run as the sophomore turned on the jets to reach home on a throwing error by the pitcher. Nelson then recorded three RBI after hitting another home run with runners on second and third.
 
The Royals would increase their lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Kaylee DeJesus single and an RBI double from Nelson.
 
Southern New Hampshire scored once more in the top of the fifth before the Royals delivered the finishing touch in the form of a two-run homer to center field from Jordyn Thompson. Mickler then scored the Royals' final run of the game crossing home plate on a DeJesus single up the middle.
 
Nelson and DeJesus were perfect at the plate in game one as Nelson hit 3-for-3 with two runs and six RBI and DeJesus hit 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI.
 
Kate Hunter pitched all five innings, striking out three and allowing seven hits. Her record improved 4-1 with the win.
 
Game Two: Queens 3 | Mt. Olive 2

Mount Olive struck first in game two in the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead. Queens was able to even the score in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Nelson that pushed DeJesus.
 
The score remained knotted at 1-1 until late in the game when a home run from the Trojans' Kylie Emanuele put them in front 2-1 in the top of the sixth. The Royals had an answer again as Haley Hmiel recorded an RBI single to tie the game. Kayla Smith scored the game-tying run after recording a double to get on base.
 
The Royals won the game in the bottom of the seventh just when it seemed the game may go into extra innings. After doubling to left field, Mickler advanced to third on a SAC bunt from Gerlea Patton. Kasidi Staley then recorded an RBI on the game's final play as the Trojans allowed her to reach first on a fielder's choice and missed their chance to get Mickler out at home.
 
Jordan Dunn collected another victory improving her record to 3-4 after striking out five and only allowing three hits.
 
The Royals will travel to take on North Greenville University Tuesday, Feb. 22. Games are set to begin at 2 and 4 p.m.
