SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team, currently ranked 16
th nationally, defeated Lynn University by a score of 16-15 this afternoon in a neutral site game. The win moves the Royals to 2-0 on the year.
Tyler Ewen led the Royals with seven goals to match the program's single-game record. He also had two assists to give him nine points in the win.
Kealan Pilon added six points on two goals and four assists while
Hunter Meyer totaled four points on two goals and two assists. In addition,
Adam Barry and
Jack Royer each added two goals.
Trailing by one goal early, the Royals scored three unanswered goals to lead 3-1 with 7:50 on the clock in the first quarter. Lynn would answer to cut the lead to one, but back-to-back goals from Ewen and Pilon gave the Royals cushion once more. They would eventually take a 6-4 lead into the second where the Fighting Knights were able to pull within one, 8-7. However, Queens scored four goals in a row to close the half in front 12-7.
Queens was outscored 3-1 in the third quarter giving the game a 13-9 score heading into the final 15 minutes of action. The Fighting Knights continued their attack in the fourth opening with back-to-back goals and chipping away at Queens' lead. A goal from Pilon at 11:59 would push the margin back to three, 14-11, but Lynn answered once again. Lynn then went on a 3-1 run making it a one points game, 15-14, with 5:50 to play.
Queens' Meyer would be the difference maker this evening, finding the back of the cage to score a man-up goal at 3:45 that proved to be the insurance the Royals needed to hold off the Fighting Knights for the win.
Queens outshot Lynn, 47-44, putting 31 shots on goal to their 30. The Royals also won the battle for ground balls, 40-31. Additionally,
Alex Alonso won 19-of-35 face-offs and had 14 ground balls.
In the cage,
William Powley earned the win after totaling a career-high 15 saves.
The Fighting Knights were led by Xander Cosenza who had eight points on five goals and three assists. Jalen Stanton scored four goals while Joseph Michalski and Mathew Ilchuck each added three goals.
Queens is back at home next Saturday taking on No. 14 Mount Olive at 1 p.m. at Dickson Field.
