Mendonca's Hat Trick Propels Royals to First ASUN Victory

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (3-9 overall, 1-4 ASUN) made history on Saturday night when they took down Jacksonville University (3-6-3 overall, 0-3-2 ASUN) for their first conference win in program history. The monumental senior night victory was sparked by graduate student Felipe Mendonca's fourth career hat trick, and the first around the ASUN this season.

Turning Point
The difference in the pivotal conference match proved to be the breakout performance from veteran Felipe Mendonca. With just one goal heading into tonight's match, Mendonca put away three first half goals to propel the Royals to victory. The Brazil native ripped a season-high seven shots while placing three on goal.
 
Key Stats & Notes
  • Felipe Mendonca's hat trick tied the program-high for the most goals scored in a single game. Out of the nine hat tricks in Queens history, Mendonca has scored four of them. The Salvador, Brazil native has 24 career goals which moves up to eighth all-time in program history.
  • Axel Horrocks made his second straight start between the pipes for the Royals. The Merlo, Argentina native recorded his second consecutive clean sheet while picking up one save after facing five shots.
  • Senior Caio Brandao continues to stay in rhythm on the attack ripping a season-best three shots, and placing two on frame. In the last three matches, Brandao has taken six shots, including multi-shot performances in their last two wins.
  • Freshman Jamahl Brown provided an energetic spark off the Queens bench playing a season-high 35 minutes and taking a pair of shots.
  • The shutout marked the third of the season for the Royals backline, including their second straight.
  • Four Royals turned in a complete game, including Axel Horrocks, Samuel Idinge, Boris Basara, and Caleb Patsch. On the night, 17 Royals took the pitch.
  • Queens won the shooting battle 13-5 and ripped nine in the first half. The Royals offense is clicking at the right time as they have turned in multi-shot performances in eight of their last nine matches.

Up Next
The Royals will begin a critical three-game road stretch as the season winds down on Friday, Oct. 21 at Florida Gulf Coast. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Over the road trip, the Royals will look to gain points in the ASUN Standings with the conference tournament looming. The Royals will face FGCU, Bellarmine, and Liberty who are slightly ahead of Queens in the standings.
