CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (6-9, 5-9 SAC) defeated Mars Hill University (1-17, 1-12 SAC), this afternoon inside Curry Arena completing their first home-and-home sweep of the season.
With the game sitting tied 7-7 nearly halfway through the first quarter, the Royals erupted with a 16-2 run to take a 14-point lead, 23-9, into the second quarter of action. Queens then held the Lions scoreless for over half of the second period while increasing the margin to 27 points, 36-9. A three-pointer from
Kristy Hamze would put the Royals in front by 30, 41-11, with 3:13 to play, and they later went into the break on top, 46-19.
The Lions had the momentum to start the third scoring seven unanswered points to close the gap to 20, 46-26, but a timeout called by Queens Head Coach
Jen Brown got the Royals back on track. An 8-2 push out of the timeout would swell the margin back to 26 before the Royals eventually closed the period leading 65-41. Queens then maintained their comfortable lead throughout the fourth to collect their second win in a row.
Queens is now 3-5 since the start of the new year after picking up two wins in a row this week for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
Freshman
Malea Garrison had a standout game recording career-highs in points and rebounds with 16 and 17, respectively. The double-double is the first of her collegiate career as well.
Kalaya Hall finished with 24 points, eight rebounds, seven steals, and five assists while
Kristy Hamze added 15 points and three rebounds.
Taylor Stevens completed play with seven points, eight rebounds, and six assists and
Finley Lefevers totaled eight points and five rebounds.
Maddie Gillie led the Lions with 22 points and seven rebounds while De'Ja Marshall added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Queens will have a quick turnaround as they are scheduled to take on Limestone on the road on Monday, Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m.
