CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The No. 11/13 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (13-2, 9-2 SAC) hit the century mark for the third time this season defeating Anderson University (7-9, 4-7 SAC), 101-79, inside Curry Arena on Wednesday night. The dominating win marks the Royals sixth straight victory, including four wins in a row at home, as they keep pace at the top of the South Atlantic Conference.
The game was back-and-forth early, as both teams came out on fire on the offensive end. Queens led Anderson 18-17 at the second media timeout with 11:30 remaining in the first half. The Royals slowly increased their lead, using their efficient offense to grow their lead to as much as 46-34 with 1:29 to play in the first half. The Royals would eventually take a 49-38 lead into the halftime break.
Queens remained on fire on the offensive end into the second half, as they outscored the Trojans 16-9 in the first four minutes of the second half to extend their lead to 62-45 with 16:00 to play. The Royals would then amp up the pressure on the defensive end, going on a 13-3 run to take a 75-48 lead with 10:55 remaining.
The visitors would respond with a quick 8-0 run to cut the Royals lead to 75-56 but the Royals would quickly re-extend their lead to 82-58 with 6:43 to play. The Royals would never lead by less than 20 the rest of the way, extending the margin to as much as 34 points before defeating the Trojans 101-70 inside Curry Arena.
Jamari Smith led the Royals in points, with 19, and corralled a team-high 8 rebounds. The junior has reached double figures in 13 games this season.
AJ McKee was on fire from deep, as he scored 16 points while shooting 4-of-5 from deep.
Kenny Dye was once again the steady floor general for the Royals as he had a team-leading 7 assists on the night while adding 14 points. The Royals bench was crucial in the victory as they collectively had 37 points, including 10 points from
Josh Dilling and nine points from
BJ McLaurin.
Queens shot a season-best 54-percent from the field and were scorching hot from behind the arc draining 73-percent of their deep shots. The Royals defense was stifling, as they forced 20 turnovers on the night which they converted into 22 points. The Royals remained dominant on the glass as they outrebounded the Trojans 37-29, including 11 offensive rebounds which they converted into 11 second-chance points.
The Royals return to action this Saturday, January 15
