Queens and Wingate Play to a 3-3 Draw in SAC Opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (1-1-1, 0-0-1 SAC) opened South Atlantic Conference play against the Wingate University Bulldogs (2-2-1, 0-0-1 SAC) Wednesday night, playing to a 3-3 tie.

The Bulldogs would be first on the board with Devin Scully scoring in the 25th minute. Mikkel Fahlen Brunn would then find the back of the net for Wingate, creating a 2-0 lead against the Royals. It seemed Wingate would take the 2-0 advantage into intermission but David Alvarez capitalized on a mistake by Wingate's keeper in the 44th minute to cut the lead to one, 2-1, just before the break.

In the second half, Wingate's Soren Nygaard scored a goal to put his team back in front by two, 3-1, in the 53rd. However, Queens' leading goal scorer Felipe Mendonca answered for the Royals with a goal in the 72nd minute. Mendonca then scored the equalizer to force overtime in the 83rd minute on a header.

Both overtime periods saw just a combined total of three shots as neither team found the golden goal and the game ended in a 3-3 draw.

Both Queens and Wingate completed tonight's game with 10 shots apiece as the Bulldogs totaled seven shots on goal to the Royals' six.

The Royals will be back at Dickson Field Saturday, September 18 to take on Newberry College. The match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
