CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (3-5, 1-1 SAC) returned to The Tuck this afternoon to face Augusta University (4-8), splitting the nonconference series with the Jaguars.
Game One: Augusta 10 - Queens 2
Augusta's offense scored 10 runs on 12 hits in the first game of the day. They would get off to a quick start putting two runs on the board in the first inning. They then added another two in the second and a home run from Bella Fernan in the top of the third put them ahead 5-0.
The score stalled at 5-0 until
Breanna Martinez homered in the top of the sixth to record two RBIs and cut the Jaguars lead to three, 5-3. However, Augusta ran away with things in the top of the seventh adding five runs to their score. An error and a wild pitch by the Royals allowed the first two runs, while Jakala Skull and Oliva Biles combined to record the final three RBIs in the game.
Haley Nelson took the loss in the circle after pitching all seven innings while Mary Tillman of Augusta picked up the win.
Game Two: Queens 4- Augusta 3
In game two, Queens held a 2-0 lead at the close of the second inning thanks to RBIs recorded by
Kasidi Staley and
Chloe Palmer. However, a single to center field by Augusta's Biles brought Skull home to cut the lead to two in the third inning.
Following a pitching change by the Royals, a home run from Augusta's Skull and a double to left field by Summer Frye put two runs on the board for the Jaguars to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth. The tie remained until the bottom of the eighth when an error by Augusta's third baseman allowed the Royals' Palmer to tag home for the game-winning run.
Victoria Elder took the win in the circle after pitching four innings and recording three strikeouts while only allowing one run.
Shannon McGuire entered the game in the fifth and recorded six strike outs.
Queens will be back at home Saturday, March 6, facing Carson-Newman University at The Tuck in a doubleheader scheduled 1 and 3 p.m.
