CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (3-7, 1-3 SAC) faced Carson-Newman University (10-2, 5-1) this afternoon at The Tuck falling to the Eagles in both games of the doubleheader.
Game One: Carson-Newman 16 - Queens 0
Leading 4-0 after two innings of play, the Eagles got hot in the third, recording 10 runs on five hits to extend their lead to 14-0. They then added one more run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to give the game its finals score.
Victoria Elder,
Khristen McPherson, and
Kate Hunter saw time in the pitching circle during the game. Elder recorded the loss while Lacie Rinus of Carson-Newman pitched all five innings for the Eagles to record the win.
Game Two: Carson-Newman 14- Queens 5
The Eagles carried the momentum from game one in to the second sending two balls outside of the fence in just the first. They would lead 7-0 by the end of the second inning and three more runs scored in the top of the third gave them a 10-0 lead before the Royals got on the board.
After
Sabrina Martinez was walked, she then stole second base putting the Royals in a good position to score.
Breanna Martinez then recorded a base hit allowing her sister to advance to third.
Kasidi Staley would be the one to step up and bring them both home recording a double for two RBIs.
McKenzie McCullen and
Haley Nelson also recorded RBIs in the inning to help close the margin to six, 10-4.
Queens' final run of the day came in the bottom of the fourth when
Sabrina Martinez recorded the second home run of her career to give the game a 12-5 score. The Eagles followed scoring two more runs in the fifth inning to close the game.
Shannon McGuire took the loss after pitching two innings while Nelson pitched three. NicKolette Ferguson took the win for the Eagles.
Next, Queens will travel to Hickory, N.C., to take on No. 21 Lenoir-Rhyne in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 9. Games are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
