CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team rebounded from a midweek road loss to sweep visiting Newberry College 3-0 25-15, 15-17, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon inside Curry Arena.
Queens (4-2, 4-2 SAC) held the Newberry (3-3, 3-3 SAC) offense to a .023 hitting performance behind 71 digs on defense. Four different players recorded double-digit digs led by a 17-dig effort from libero
JayCee Jones.
Chanel Turner and
Casey Tarvin followed with 13 and 12 digs, respectively, while
Kate Majewski chipped in 10 digs on the back row.
Trailing 3-2 in the opening set, a 6-0 service run by Turner put the Royals ahead 8-3 as Queens led by as many as nine points on multiple occasions before closing the set with a kill from middle
Logan Witt.
Queens never trailed in the second set to go ahead 2-0 in the match. The Wolves looked to stave off elimination in the third set, leading 8-7 until three unanswered points from the Royals put the home team ahead 10-8. After Newberry regained the lead at 11-10, Queens used a 9-6 spurt to go in front for good as a Tarvin kill put the match away.
Tarvin led all players with 16 kills and hit .229 on the outside, while Witt totaled 11 kills and hit .375 from the middle.
Brooke Farley paced the offense with 34 assists, 12 digs and two service aces.
The Royals remain at home for their next match against Anderson University (S.C.) on Monday at 7 p.m.
