CHARLOTTE, N.C.– The sixth-ranked Queens Royals picked up their second South Atlantic Conference win beating Wingate 17-10 at home. With the result, the Royals move to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference.
Kyleigh Masteran was unstoppable today producing the spectacular and rarely seen double hat trick while
Carson Giordano seemed to have a third eye finding open teammates with ease, setting up five goals.
Sydney Bracken was also impressive notching four goals. A trio of Royals finished with three points each amassing the total in a plethora of ways.
Shannon Donovan completed the conventional hat trick,
Rachel Perrett finished with two goals and an assist, and
Ally Blood added a goal and two assists. Perrett also scored her 100
th career goal in the win.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle as neither side could truly take control of the game. Queens opened the scoring with a pair of goals 45 seconds apart, but Wingate answered within the minute. This pattern would persist as both sides traded goals for the next 14 minutes. With under 10 minutes to play in the first half, the Royals held a 5-3 lead, but the Bulldogs were able to draw level after a pair of goals five minutes apart. Queens did not wait long to re-establish their lead scoring just 19 seconds later to take a 6-5 lead into the break.
The second half threatened to be another seesaw battle as the teams traded goals within the first two minutes. However, Queens was able to find a groove scoring three in a five-minute span while stifling Wingate's offensive chances. This was the Royals' largest lead so far with the score sitting 10-6. The game found its oscillating rhythm once again as the Bulldogs cut into the lead just in time for Queens to come up with a response thirty seconds later. Back-to-back goals from Bracken and Perrett pushed the lead to five as the Royals held a 13-8 advantage. Queens closed out the game with an impressive high-octane attack that proved too much to handle as the Royals scored four in five minutes to put the game to bed.
Queens was able to put the pieces together and construct a quality team win leading all team statistics. The Royals outshot the Bulldogs 36-21 and were more accurate finding the net 28 times compared to Wingate's 17. Both teams struggled to maintain possession as Queens committed 21 turnovers and the Bulldogs had 26. The Royals were able to find success clearing the ball doing so 15-20 for a 75 percent success rate. Queens' ride was once again a menacing force as Wingate finished 14-25 on the day for a 56 percent success rate. The Royals were gritty all day winning 26 ground balls while the Bulldogs came away with 17. Queens won 18 draws as Wingate managed 11.
The Royals are back in action Saturday, March 13 as they travel to Mars Hill to take on the Lions. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
