Men's Soccer Opens Season With Overtime Win Against Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (1-0, 1-0 SAC) opened South Atlantic Conference play with a win in overtime over Anderson University (0-2, 0-2 SAC), 2-1, behind two goals from junior Felipe Mendonca.

Queens got on the scoreboard first as Mendonca scored an unassisted goal in the 39th minute to give the Royals a 1-0 lead they carried into the halftime break.

Goalkeeper Tim Tretbar collected back-to-back saves early in the second half to preserve the Royals' lead, however, the Trojans broke through to even the score at 1-all with a goal in the 67th minute of play.

In the overtime period, Mendonca and teammate Andre Castro had consecutive shots turned away in the 91st minute before Mendonca buried the game-winner in the 93rd minute of play. Tretbar recorded six saves in the match as Anderson held a 15-11 advantage in total shots.

Queens returns home to Dickson Field next Thursday to welcome Limestone University for a match scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
