CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (1-13, 1-12 SAC) hosted UVA Wise (11-3,10-3 SAC) this afternoon, falling 73-61 to the Cavaliers on Homecoming.
Kalaya Hall led the Royals with 23 points, four rebounds, and four steals.
Amari Davis was just one rebound short of recording her second double-double this season finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Christina Deng added 11 points, eight rebounds, and four steals while
Caitlyn Moore chipped in four points, six rebounds, and five assists.
After Davis scored the opening bucket of the game to give the Royals an early 2-0 lead, the Cavs quickly responded with a pair of threes. They then increased the margin to eight before Davis and Hall teamed up to put Queens on top, 17-16, by the end of the period. Davis scored 10 of her 15 points in the quarter.
The Cavs were able to regain control of the lead early in the second quarter. They then strung together a pair of 8-0 runs to build a 15-point lead before a free-throw from Queens' Moore gave the game a 39-25 score at the halftime break.
Critical back-to-back three-pointers from Hall and Leedle contributed to the Royals pulling within 9, 41-32, with 7:15 on the clock in the third. UVA Wise had an answer in the form of a Caitlyn Ross jumper to increase their lead back out to 11, but Queens responded with seven unanswered points to close the gap to four, 43-39, at 3:56. However, the Cavs would barely hang on to their lead, 52-44, heading into the final quarter.
UVA Wise was able to maintain control in the fourth due in large part to Ross' performance as she scored 10 of their 21 points in the period to help lead the Cavs to victory on the road over Queens.
Ross led UVA Wise with 28 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Nia Vanzant had a double-double where she chipped in 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Royals will be back home Monday, February 15 to face Catawba College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
